Some years ago, an event occurred that rocked, wounded and scarred us as a nation. On that day there were those who chose courage over fear, service over safety, even as the event was occurring. The following is a tribute to those heroes who faced unimaginable odds, and helped the helpless, often at the cost of their own lives. To them, to their families, I say, we have not forgotten and we are grateful.

New York, 9/11/01

Heroes move like ghosts on a mission.

Shedding personal safety like

An unwanted coat on a hot day.

Leaving family, friends,

The responsibilities of home

To search through ash and rubble

For a hand, a face, a heartbeat

Still unquenched

By dreams of a foul glory, still

Unshattered  by hate.

The heroes come,

Moving in reverse common sense

To those who cannot survive

Alone, in groups,

Consciously heedless of the danger,

Toward the flames, toward precarious

Balance of concrete on stone,

To search through ash and rubble

For a hand, a face, a heartbeat

Still unquenched

By dreams of foul glory, still

Unshattered

By hate.
